 Beating Neuropathy

$17.29

Taking Misery to Miracles in Just 5 weeks…New protocol dramatically reduces pain, burning and tingling, fosters patient independence too…What’s different about this program?Managing peripheral neuropathy in private practice can be one of the most frustrating clinical experiences for Primary Care Physicians and Neurologists alike.Until now, most treatments have focused only on symptom control, largely by way of drugs, and blood sugar control in diabetic patients. Physical Therapy alone often provides little if any lasting relief. As you know, drug costs and patient compliance, as well as medication side effects have left us all wishing there were more as doctors that we could do for our patients.Well, now there is! Using a combined program of patient care which includes nutrition and diet education, exercise and rehab therapies. Plus, we use clinically tested 7.8Hz electrotherapy. With additional massage techniques and spinal manual therapies where indicated, patients can achieve not only lasting relief, but long term self management. Most patients can then be transitioned to home care with a successful clinical trial.Whether due to diabetes, chemotherapy or other disorders, neuropathy symptoms share common causes. Nerve tissues are highly vulnerable to damage from diseases that impair the body’s ability to transform nutrients into energy, process biochemical waste products, circulate oxygen, or manufacture some components of cellular repair.Diabetes mellitus is a major cause of peripheral neuropathy in the United States. About 60 percent to 70 percent of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of neuropathy. Chemotherapy is another leading cause in our age advancing population. We are now able to offer these patients cost effective help, with a rapid transition to home care and periodic follow-up visits.

Better Meal-Planning With The Glycemic Index Health Tool: Basic Health Information About The Glycemic Index Which Includes A Glycemic Index Food Chart With A Listing Of Low Glycemic Index Foods And High Glycemic Index Foods To Help You With Meal-Plannin

$3.99

What is the glycemic index? How can it help in managing weight loss, diabetes and heart disease? The glycemic index, or the GI as it is commonly known, is a health tool that’s used to measure the effects of carbohydrates in blood sugar levels. It is a table that consists of a list of different foods and their equivalent rating as to how fast and how slow they can raise blood sugar levels. The rating scale is from 0 to 100 with high glycemic foods rating high numbers. So, glucose, for instance, which is the fastest carbohydrate, has the highest rating of 100. What this health tool indicates then is that foods with a high glycemic index will increase the blood sugar levels rapidly and foods with a low glycemic index will raise blood sugar levels slowly. It is a very helpful tool especially for people who are managing diabetes and heart disease. It is used as a guide to help measure carb count and calorie count in order to formulate a diet plan which will correspond to the person’s physical activity, diet restrictions and overall lifestyle. This is critical for people with heart disease because measuring carb count and calorie count is essential for fat metabolism and weight control. This is also critical for people with diabetes because measuring carb count in the diet will help monitor and maintain blood sugar levels more effectively. This book has information that will explain how the glycemic index tool can be used correctly.

Diabetes Without Drugs: The 5-Step Program to Control Blood Sugar Naturally and Prevent Diabetes Complications

Diabetes Without Drugs: The 5-Step Program to Control Blood Sugar Naturally and Prevent Diabetes Complications

$34.99

Based on breakthrough studies, Cohen’s program reveals how people with diabetes can reduce their need for prescription medication and minimize the disease’s effect on the body. Most doctors consider diabetes a one-way street—once you have it, your only option is to manage the symptoms with a restricted diet, close monitoring of blood sugar, and expensive medications. Pharmacist Suzy Cohen shows that diabetes can be treated instead through safe, natural means, like food and vitamins, rather than strictly relying on prescription drugs. She shifts the focus away from glucose management to a whole body approach, using supplements, minerals, and dietary changes to lose weight, repair cell damage, improve insulin function, and reduce the side effects from prescription drugs, many of which rob nutrients from the body and cause additional symptoms.  This 5-step program uses natural alternatives, such as drinking nutrition-packed green drinks, adding vitamin D and anti-inflammatory supplements, increasing fiber intake, and including minerals in the diet to help restore the body’s own supply of insulin. Diabetes without Drugs explains how patients can protect their heart, kidneys, eyesight, and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes and shows the impact that the right foods and the right supplements can make in reducing blood sugar levels, aiding weight loss, and restoring vibrant health to everyone with diabetes.

Eat and Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss: The Visual Program to Prevent and Control Diabetes

$19.95

Beat diabetes and lose weight!Ask any doctor or nutritionist who treats patients with diabetes: the first focus for controlling the disease is a healthy eating plan. But typical diabetic eating plans have been all about what you can’t eat and what to do if you fall prey to a craving for foods you shouldn’t have. But now a typical day in the life of a diabetic might start with a smoked salmon-and-dill omelet, continue to a lunch of three-bean chili, salsa and guacamole, and finish with a dinner of grilled shrimp and shaved fennel, topped off by a dessert of chocolate terrine. It’s a kind of eating that virtually guarantees not just control of the disease and a satisfying of the appetite, but an emphasis on specific nutrients that actually target diabetes, beating back its potential side effects and maintaining the healthy weight that is key to controlling the disease. In Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss, Dr. Howard Shapiro uses the same visual method of food comparisons that made his bestselling weight-loss books so popular and easy to use. Now he has teamed with top chef Franklin Becker, a diabetic himself, and together they reveal the secrets to a diet that can actually help you prevent and beat diabetes—without depriving yourself of delicious food.

Endogenous Toxins: Targets for Disease Treatment and Prevention

Endogenous Toxins: Targets for Disease Treatment and Prevention

$289.67

Contrary to popular belief, a fair number of human diseases are not dependent on outside factors but are caused by molecules generated within our own body. These so-called endogenous toxins come in many varieties and can be due to malnutrition, an imbalanced diet, excessive eating or drinking, or genetic defects. There is now a growing awareness of these ever-present “silent toxins”, which largely determine our risk of developing such chronic diseases as diabetes, metabolic syndrome or neurodegeneration.Designed as a first-stop reference for researchers and professionals in toxicology, pharmacology and medicine, this handbook is the very first to tie together the knowledge from many disciplines that has so far only been available in widely dispersed sources throughout the primary literature. As such, it presents the complete picture on what is currently known about endogenous toxins, including their generation, mode of action, resulting disease condition, and available countermeasures.Clearly divided into four parts, the first systematically covers important toxic molecule species, including metabolic intermediates and reactive oxygen species. The second discusses the role of genetically determined metabolic malfunctions, such as galactosemia, hyperlipidemia, porphyria, hemochromatosis and related conditions, while part three looks at acquired and chronic diseases caused or exacerbated by endogenous toxins, such as hepatic injury, asthma, rheumatism, colorectal cancer, reperfusion diseases, neurodegeneration and aging. The final part reviews currents strategies to control and minimize the effect of endogenous toxins, either by nutritional or pharmacological interventions. With its complete coverage integrating molecular and systemic aspects from the biochemical basis to human disease conditions, this is an invaluable reference for toxicologists, biochemists, nutrition specialists and physicians.

Health-related quality of life in Kuwait: Validation of generic and disease-specific measures.

Health-related quality of life in Kuwait: Validation of generic and disease-specific measures.

$108

Chronic diseases such as diabetes have become increasingly prominent around the world. Diabetes care requires a combination of medication, exercise, diet, self-management education, and psychosocial care to reduce the risk of long-term complications. Following this strict regimen can have an adverse effect on the patient’s quality of life. Quality of life is a broad concept that is difficult to define and study. This study focused on the health-related component of quality of life.;Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in Kuwait. While the incidence of the disease is documented, little is known about its effect on the life of the Kuwaiti population. This is partly due to the lack of valid Arabic versions of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instruments.;The purpose of this study was to investigate the construct validity of two HRQOL measures in a sample of older adults in Kuwait with Type 2 diabetes. The two measures were the Short Form 36-Item Health Survey version 2.0, a generic measure, and the Problem Areas in Diabetes survey, a disease-specific measure.;A total of 240 Kuwaiti citizens over the age of 55 years living in Kuwait City participated in this study. Participants were divided into two groups: the Diabetes Group included 120 older adults with diabetes and the Control Group included 120 older adults without diabetes.;Three approaches were used to assess the construct validity of the Arabic versions of the SF-36v2 Health Survey and the Problem Areas in Diabetes survey: factor analysis, correlation, and known-group method. The results of this study support the use of the Arabic versions of the two surveys to measure HRQOL of older adults in Kuwait with Type 2 diabetes. Standards for construct validity were well met, with few exceptions.

Increasing regimen adherence in young adults with Type 1 diabetes.

$49.99

This study examined the impact of a cognitive behavioral intervention on the adherence of young adults with Type 1 diabetes. Researchers have found that adherence problems exist during childhood and adolescence, and continue into early adulthood (Iannotti & Bush, 1993; Susman-Stillman, Hyson, Anderson, & Collins, 1997). Intervention research has been done with children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes, but little intervention research has been done with young adults with Type 1 diabetes. Six outpatients at a major urban hospital in a large Midwestern city were recruited for the study. Inclusion criteria were insufficient blood glucose testing frequency (an average of three or less tests per day over a two week period) or poor glycemic control (an A1c level of seven percent or above). The intervention emphasized utilizing cognitive and behavioral techniques, such as problem solving and cognitive restructuring, to increase adherence behaviors. Adherence was measured by revised 24-hour recall interviews and blood glucose meter readings. Dependent variables were diet frequency, testing frequency, insulin frequency, insulin timing, insulin adjustment, exercise frequency, and objective testing frequency. A multiple baseline design across participants was used to assess the potential effectiveness of the intervention. At least one baseline data point was stable or deteriorating before the intervention was begun, and the start time was staggered. Data was gathered during baseline, during the intervention, and at follow-up. Data points consisted of the dependent measures for each individual, and visual analysis of graphed data was used to determine whether the intervention appeared to have had an effect, and whether changes were clinically significant. It was hypothesized that individuals would improve from baseline across some dependent variables when the intervention began, and maintain some improvements at follow-up. The results suggest that the intervention may have

Prolonging Healthful Living with a Fiber-Rich Diet

Many studies with animals, including monkeys, have shown that reducing calorie intake significantly extends the life span. Normally, reducing calorie intake is achieved by reducing food intake. In people, such a life style, reducing one’s food intake, is not likely to attract many individuals. Thus, another approach is outlined in this book: increasing fiber consumption at the expense of calorie-rich food components. The book discusses the role of fiber in food intake and digestion. It gives the latest information on the role of a fiber-rich diet in relation to diabetes, heart disease, weight control, cancer and gastrointestinal regularity. Tasty recipes rich in fiber are also included as is a table of fiber content of most common foods.

The prevalence of obesity among Mexican Americans has been increasing over the past decade, and is associated with hypertension and diabetes. Secondary data from DREAMS study were used to evaluate whether behavioral intervention on diet and physical activity using promotores de salud model significantly reduced blood pressure and body mass index among adult participants. Results showed significant changes in systolic blood pressure after the trial within intervention and control group, without significant difference in changes of blood pressure and body mass index after the trial between groups. These findings suggest that more comprehensive programs are needed to better understand Hispanic population's health behavior.

The Adaptation Diet

In the 1980s, the field of psychoneuroimmunolgy revolutionized the understanding of the mind body connection. Studies showed that beliefs and attitudes are directly linked to chronic medical conditions like heart disease and cancer. This new information made me more aware of the impact that stress can have on health. I began to research how diet and nutrients can impact the function of the brain and the hormonal system, which control the production of stress hormones. Recent breakthroughs further clarified the changes that can occur in the midbrain, the area of the brain that directly controls stress-hormone secretions. Concepts such as allostasis and allostatic load helped to explain why so many people have trouble recovering their health after stressful experiences and prolonged poor dietary habits. These ideas helped me to appreciate the widespread effect of stress on my patients’ symptoms and led me to focus on methods to improve adaptation. The Cortisol Connection Diet: The Breakthrough Program to Control Stress and Lose Weight

$10.95

In his best-selling The Cortisol Connection, Dr. Shawn Talbott explained how elevated levels of the cortisol hormone, when triggered by stress, will increase appetite, enhance fat storage, disrupt blood sugar control, and eventually lead to obesity that can cause diabetes and other serious conditions. This concise follow-up puts Talbott’s cortisol control, diet, and exercise ideas into an accessible format. The Cortisol Connection Diet shows beleaguered dieters how to eat for quality and for quantity at every meal. It focuses on the quality of carbs, fats, and proteins as well as the quantity, and explains how to use food, exercise, and dietary supplements to control cortisol and blood sugar. Most importantly, the book shows readers how to change their metabolic response to food and shed those seemingly impossible last 20 pounds. Included are a three-week log to chart diet, exercise, and supplements; and a sample regimen for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and supplements.

The Implications of stress and the effect it has on M ori People

In this review I will show the connection between diabetes, stress and barriers to care and the impact these have on Maori who have type 2 diabetes. I have undertaken an extensive literature review, which focused mainly on indigenous peoples, and more specifically on Maori. I explored the connection between all the factors involved and combined these with reflections from my own clinical practice experience. My conclusion will show that stress, diet, exercise and barriers to care place a heavy burden on the lives of Maori who live in Aotearoa/New Zealand, suffering from the dis-ease of diabetes. By empowering them to face their situation and see this from a wellness rather than an illness perspective, they can take control of their diabetes and so will live a healthy, longer life, ensuring quality time with their mokopuna/grandchildren.
